<Issue No. 26-20> Who Is a True Teacher? (Singing the Blessing of Encounters)

May is said to be the month of family and the month of gratitude. In Sydney’s chilly weather, I find myself reflecting on the precious teachers who have served as milestones in my life. In an age where people say, “There are teachers and an abundance of knowledge retailers, but no truly great teachers,” I would like to look back on my life and humbly confess that my journey has been “a blessed pilgrimage of meeting true teachers.”

The very first and forever true teacher in my life is my own father. From childhood, I grew up watching from behind his back what it means to be diligent and what genuine dedication to God looks like. Rather than teaching through words, my father was someone who revealed truth through the trajectory of his life. Even when I was wandering through dark tunnels in life, or sitting down in despair and discouragement, my father never imposed his own thoughts on me. He simply waited for me in quiet steadfastness, and in places unseen, he stayed up through the night in tears, supporting me with his prayers.

There was a defining moment when my father’s tearful prayers gave me strength. During my military service, there was a time when I was subjected to harsh beatings and persecution by senior soldiers for the sole reason of believing in Jesus. In that moment when I felt so wronged and pained that I wanted to give up, what kept me going was my father’s teaching and his devoted prayers. Even while enduring relentless blows, I was able to persevere and ultimately complete my ministry as a military chaplain — because, while my body was in the army, it was my father’s faithful prayers shaking the heavenly throne on my behalf that held me together.

And that is not all. When I entered the path of ministry and wandered within the ivory towers of truth, there were giants of theology who offered me depth of scholarship and a vision for spirituality. Professors Kim Jeong-woo, Kim Ji-chan, Kwon Seong-su, Kim Eui-won, Lee Han-su, Jeong Hun-taek, Shim Sang-beop, Seo Cheol-won, Kim Gil-seong, Yoo Jae-won, Lee Gwan-jik, Park Yong-gyu, Park Geon-taek, Kim Seong-tae, Hwang Seong-cheol, and countless other teachers taught me what it means to pursue honest theology that does not grow proud before the Word of God.

Furthermore, it is because of the many pastoral teachers — Ok Han-heum, Lee Gyu-hyeon, Choi Young-gi, Kim Jae-jeong, Kim In-gi, An Tae-jun, Lee Gyeong-jun, Lee Jae-cheol, Myeong Seong-hun, and many others — who showed me a great landmark through their lives and ministries of how a pastor ought to walk, that I am now able to stand here and be a pastor who feeds the flock.

Yet the one person to whom all these many beloved teachers were pointing — the ultimate and perfect “true teacher” of our lives — is none other than our Lord Jesus Christ.

Why is Jesus our true teacher? Because while the teachers of this world impart knowledge and show us a path, our teacher Jesus personally became “the way, the truth, and the life” itself. The Lord did not compel us into a life of discipleship. Rather, He laid aside His heavenly glory, came down to this earth, and washed the feet of sinners — demonstrating with His whole being the “rhetoric of servanthood.” And when we were destined to die eternally because of sin, He loved us to the point of having His body torn on the cross, personally teaching us what “sacrifice and forgiveness” truly mean. Even when every teacher in this world departs from us, He is the one who promised, “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20, NIV), and who even now, through the Holy Spirit, gently guides and persuades our lives — He is our true teacher, Jesus.

Beloved members of Sydney New Life Church, who you encounter in life determines the eternal colour of your life. Meeting a true teacher is life’s greatest blessing. I encourage you, in the week ahead, to remember the physical and spiritual teachers who have left their mark on your life, and to express your gratitude to them. And beyond that, may the blessing of encountering — deeply and personally — Jesus, our true teacher who every day personally persuades us and leads us with love, be abundantly present in each of your lives. I pray this in the name of the Lord.

On the morning of Teacher’s Sunday, 17 May 2026,

                                                                                                                                            Your pastor, Kang Seung-chan
