최근 한국에서 공직자 후보자들을 둘러싼 안타까운 뉴스들을 접하며 마음 한구석이 무거워짐을 느낍니다. 겉으로 보기에는 누구보다 독실한 믿음을 가진 것처럼 보였던 이들이, 정작 삶의 현장에서는 비신자와 다를 바 없는 모습으로 세상의 지탄을 받는 현실은 오늘날 우리 그리스도인들이 직면한 뼈아픈 실상이요 현실입니다.
왜 이런 일이 반복될까요? 그것은 우리 신앙이 '죄 사함'이라는 칭의(의롭게 됨, Justification)의 교리에만 머물러 있고, 주님을 닮아가는 성화(예수님을 닮아 감, Sanctification)의 삶, 즉 헌신과 섬김이라는 실천적 영성을 잃어버렸기 때문입니다. 성화는 지식으로 완성되는 것이 아니라, 일상의 갈등과 고난 속에서 내 자아가 깎여 나가는 '상처'를 통과해야만 도달할 수 있는 고지입니다.

정금이 불순물을 제거하는 뜨거운 용광로를 거쳐야 하듯, 우리 역시 삶의 현장에서 말씀의 검으로 내 자아를 수술 하는 아픔을 겪어야 합니다.
우리 시드니새생명교회 공동체 식구들이 매주 목장을 통해, 그리고 가정교회의 '3축(목장, 삶공부, 연합예배)'을 통해 훈련 받는 이유가 바로 여기에 있습니다.
성숙을 향한 구체적인 발걸음으로 상반기 삶공부를 시작합니다. 오는 2월 10일(화)에 1차 개강을 하고, 이어 2월 18일(수)부터 2차 개강이 진행될 예정입니다. 그리고 5명 이상 모이면 삶공부를 개설할 것입니다.
이번 상반기 삶공부는 우리가 세상 속에서 표류하지 않도록 영적 지도를 그려주는 소중한 시간이 될 것입니다. 바쁘고 분주한 일상을 보내고 계시겠지만 이번 삶공부에 모든 새생명 식구들이 VIP분들과 함께 참여하시기를 강력히 권면합니다.
우리가 상처와 고난에 직면하는 것을 두려워하지 않고 말씀으로 수술하여 성장하고 성숙을 향해 나아갈 때, 비로소 세상은 우리를 통해 살아 계신 사랑의 하나님을 보게 될 것입니다.
칭의의 감격을 넘어, 거룩한 성화의 삶으로 세상에 선한 영향력을 끼치는 주님의 진짜 자녀로 함께 자라가길 소망합니다.

<Issue No. 26-6> “There Is No Sanctification Without Wounds”
As we encounter the recent heartbreaking news in Korea surrounding candidates for public office, my heart feels heavy. People who appeared, on the surface, to possess deep and devout faith are being publicly condemned because their lives, in practice, look no different from those of non-believers. This painful reality is one that Christians today cannot avoid facing.
Why does this keep happening? It is because our faith has remained only at the doctrine of justification—the forgiveness of sins—while losing sight of a life of sanctification, a life of becoming more like the Lord through dedication and service. Sanctification is not completed through knowledge alone. It is a summit that can only be reached by passing through the “wounds” where our ego is chipped away amid daily conflicts and suffering.
“Sanctification is not knowledge, but practice.”
Just as pure gold must pass through a blazing furnace to remove impurities, we too must endure the pain of having our self-centered nature surgically cut away by the sword of God’s Word in the real arena of life. This is precisely why our Sydney New Life Church community is trained week by week through house church groups, and through the three pillars of the house-church system—house church groups, Life Studies, and united worship.
As a concrete step towards maturity, we will begin our first-half Life Studies program. The first session will open on Tuesday, February 10, followed by the second session beginning on Wednesday, February 18. Any group of five or more people can open a Life Study class.
This first-half Life Studies season will be a precious time to draw a spiritual map that keeps us from drifting aimlessly in the world. We know you are living busy and demanding lives, but we strongly encourage every New Life family member to participate together with your VIPs.
When we do not fear facing wounds and suffering, but allow ourselves to be shaped by the Word, growing and maturing through it, the world will finally see the living God of love through us. Moving beyond the joy of justification, I pray that we will grow together as the Lord’s true children—those who live lives of holy sanctification and bring good influence to the world.
You will receive even greater grace if you reflect on this together with Sunday’s sermon, “How Can We Live a Life That Sails Forward Instead of Drifting? ” I look forward to seeing you all during our Life Studies.
